Modern
poetry is a fusion of two
forms. While the outward form is that of poetry, the language used is often that of prose. The medium is not the message. Thus, rhyme and meter are no longer considered as important as before. Brevity is the soul of wit. There is no room for verbosity in a
poem. On the other hand, each word must count. Poetry is an application of the KISS (Keep It Short and Simple) principle to literature. Unlike a novel, a poem can be read again and again without losing its charm. The poem is unique to the language it is written in. It is considered next to impossible to translate a poem. The poem may mean more than what it says. Figures of speech are often used. Poetry is an inspirational form of literature. Moreover, poetry, unless it is well written fails to inspire the reader if it has an artificial ring to it. Because poetry is not stanza, verse and rhyme, it is the language of the soul. Poetry is also a gift. It is difficult to teach the art of writing poetry. It is a truism that there are as many forms of poetry as there are poets. Each poet has a style of his own. It is difficult to classify a poem, for each poem is a mix of various thoughts and emotions. A literature of the imagination, like other forms of literature poetry is a form of self
expression. As the title itself states, in “An
Echo from the Past” the poet has dipped into his roots in search of inspiration. The past, both of an individual and of a people, finds an echo in his writing. This is the author’s fourth collection of poems, and marks a break from more secular themes he had dealt with
earlier. Though somewhat lacking in the intensity of his earlier work (in the first flush of inspiration), in this collection the author reflects upon his life as he seeks new avenues for growth and self-expression.
