Expostulation and Reply is a great poem, is very
original, and beautifully written, one of the main theme is The idea that nature is a teacher.
the dichotomy characterize by the friend and the “Expostulation” as the neo-classical thought of reason as a suprem fuction on human life. And the “Reply” by William Wordsworth as the change on the way of thinking and as the beggining of the Romantic era.
This poem has two interesting characters wich interact almost as a metaphore of the two different ways of thinking, the reason, and the Romantic; Matthew, a friend of William Wordsworth, asks him why he is sitting near the lake daydreaming when he should be reading books to understand himself.
William Wordsworth, the poet, replies with his romantic feeling, he is understanding life and himsef by alowing nature to stimulate his ideas, and feelings.
Nature and human intuition are a kind of knowledge and wisdom not found in formal education.
