Neruda made a suggestion to his company of folks that for once they implement the code of silence only for a short period of time. All they have to do for now is to count to twelve and they will all keep still for once on the face of the earth. They must not speak in any language. They must stop for a second and not move their arms so much.It would be an exotic; originating in a foreign country, esp one in the tropics; not native an exotic plant: having a strange or bizarre allure, beauty, or quality; moment; without rush; to move or act swiftly; hurry: to make a sudden or swift attack or charge: to flow or surge rapidly, often with noise: without engines; a machine that turns energy into mechanical force or motion, especially one that gets its energy from a source of heat, such as the burning of a fuel. The efficiency of an engine is the ratio between the kinetic energy produced by the machine and the energy needed to produce it.
They would all be together in a sudden strangeness.Fishermen in the cold sea would not harm whales; any of various marine mammals of the order Cetacea, having the general shape of a fish with forelimbs modified to form flippers, a tail with horizontal flukes, and one or two blowholes for breathing, especially one of the very large species as distinguished from the smaller dolphins and porpoises; and the man gathering salt would not look at his hurt hands. Those who prepare green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire, victories with no survivors; a condition of active antagonism or contention: a war of words; a price war: a concerted effort or campaign to combat or put an end to something considered injurious; would put on clean clothes and walk about with their brothers in the shade, doing nothing. What Neruda wants should not be confused with total inactivity; Not functioning or operating; out of use: inactive machinery: not being in continuous use or operation: an inactive brokerage account: retired from duty or service.
After all what is life all about? If they were not so single-minded about keeping their lives moving, and for once could do nothing, perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never understanding themselves and of threatening themselves with death. Now Neruda would count up to twelve and all of them should keep quiet and he would go and take his leave.
