After writing his first romance “The kit runner”, Khaled Hosseini wrote his “A Thousand splendid suns”. This story combines legend about
women and Afghan history. He took a title written by Shaeb A Tabrizi from the 17th century, which was written after his visit to Kabul. This romance stretches over 30 years, between 1974-2003, and contains 4 chapters.
Mariam and Laila living together at the same apartment. Mariam''s mother, which is married to a man 30 years older than her, tried to commit suicide. This romance try to reveal the lack of
freedom for women in Afghanistan and the suffering which follows that. Mariam''s life almost totally destructed, but she doesn''t let herself break down. The story changes when a 15 years old, well-educated, girl came into her life. They develop a special relationship, although all the troubles they''ve got, and becoming soul mates.
We can find the signs of history in this romance, starting at the Communist influence on Afghanistan, through the civil war until 11/9. Its historical approach, featuring its brilliant writing, makes this romance very recommended one.
