Romantic
sickness of a
century and Weltschmerz in "Sorrows of young Werther" by J.W. Goethe.
Werther''s sorrow in Wahlheim
grows repeatedly , especially when he sees his beloved in Albert''s arms and knows (although his heart suggests him, that killing Lotta''s fiancé would be the best), that he''s helpless. However, luck brings the main character to a meeting with his love (during which both of them bewail their lot) and to a kiss, because of which confused girl forbids him to see her. Werther is fully aware of the fact, that he can''t get in her and Albert''s way, he also senses, that if he stays in this state of things, he''ll go mad (just like an insane youngster, once working for Lotta''s father). Character chooses the most drastic and irreversible way of ending his earthly torments, namely suicide.
