The Devil''''s Lady- I It is a great suspense story by Linden Howard .The background of the story is set in the classical period of nineteenth century. Catharine Fairfax a 19 year old girl lived with her aunt Veronica who never married. Her mother was died when she was a child. In fact her mother was eloped with her father Daniel Fairfax when both of the families did not approve their marriage. Catharine''''s father left his wife in sorry state when she was expecting. She returned back to home .Catharine''''s grandfather traced Daniel''''s father who was rich man and wrote him to take the responsibility of Catharine but he refused to adopt a child of an ill advised marriage .Catharine was living a happy life when a stranger entered in her life. It was a spring afternoon when somebody knocked at door. It was a splendid man who introduced himself as Troy Merric, husband of Catharine''''s cousin Selina .He brought the message her grandfather who was now sick and old and wishes to see his grandchild. At first, Catharine was furious and straightly refused but at the end of the conversation she agreed to visit Sandleford, the state of her grandfather .Catharine was curious about Sandleford .But, she could not visit soon because her grandfather died after some days and she thought it useless to visit there. After some days, her aunt died and left her alone and penniless. She was surprised to discover that her aunt made Troy Merric her guardian in her will. Troy, who was in Australia on some business, sends his condolence and ordered her ready to move to Sandleford .He send Rufus Harries, a cousin to Salina to escort her to Sandleford. Rufus, a handsome Youngman, told her about her family, along with Selina, Troy and Rufus there was Alannah, a9 year old girl who was not able to speak whom Rufus hesitantly introduced as Troy''''s ill-legitimate child, he brought from Australia .He also told her about Seton Blair who''''s state Ashmead run parallel to those of Sandleford and Agnes Oaks, the fiancé of Seton who after an accident confined to wheelchair. Selina, her cousin an exceptionally beautiful leady warmly welcome her. In this ancient house she has given a tower room upstairs .At tea-time she met Seton and Agnes. She feels that Troy seems the Master of this house. Selina told her about the legend of the Sandleford.In18th century, a shoemaker was livid in the village of North Meon, who was the master of his art. According to the legend, The Devil, heard about shoemaker''''s talent, he was on his way to a Ball at Sandleford which was given by Selina''''s ancestor Argus Fairfax. The local people were afraid of Argus because he had contacts with the powers of darkness and it was considered that there was a secret way somewhere in the house through which the followers of dark powers entered in the house to celebrate the rituals. Argus, daughter anna was lamed by birth. She was in love with shoemaker. The Devil stopped at the shop of shoemaker and demanded a pair of shoes from him and told him he could name his own fee. Shoemaker recognizes the Devil and boldly said that his fee is the cure of Anna''''s lameness. The Devil agreed. Shoemaker has made two pairs of beautiful shoes one for Anna and one for Devil. He did not go to the Ball, but he heard that Anna danced exquisitely all night, and Devil falls in love with her and tried to seduce her but she refused. Next morning The Devil took shoes from her and hide them in the house and swore one day he would come back again to dance with her and this time she would not refuse her. After this, she becomes completely unbalanced and spends all her day in the searching of shoes and waiting of the Devil. On day she found drowned in the Lily-pond.
