Destiny Kills

Book Review by: CarrieO

Original Author: Keri Arthur
Destiny Kills is the first book in the new fantasy series about two different races of shapeshifting dragons.  Destiny, a
sea dragon and Trae, an air dragon, together is a confluence of events. Destiny is trying to reach her father before he dies, rescue her mother from the scientists, she herself escaped from and discover why her lover was killed. Trae is more of a mystery, very little is revealed about him and his motivations. Destiny isn’t sure whether she can trust him or not and this leads to a lot of lost time.
This story is based in our world of today with only those slight changes needed to squeeze in the fantasy elements of two different races of shapeshifting dragons.   All else appears as we see everyday life. Outside of our normal knowledge, the dragon races each have their strengths and weaknesses and where not explored as much as I would have liked.  The relationship between Destiny and Trae was an interesting part of the story and Arthur makes some jabs at the scientists making them all seem cold and distant.  The plot is fairly straightforward and good enough to follow through to the end, but I feel there could have been a few improvements to Destiny and Trae's characters.  Destiny seems to take her sweet time in reaching the two main tasks that she claims are urgent and are the reason she keeps going.  Trae, changing from a self-centered playboy-jerk to a serious-minded lover and helper from one scene to the next, willing to risk his life on the word of a complete stranger who has already betrayed him.
After all of this, the reader gets a bonus subplot. This secondary plot has as much interest as the main one and once again it could have used more exploration. In short, Destiny and Trae take on his father, a wily old dragon ‘king', and of course defeat the bad guy.  I wouldn’t say that this was a bad book, the idea of the dragons is fascinating, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it as good as Riley Jenson series. I feel the plot wasn't finished and could have been filled in better.I am not excited for the next installment.
