The Shell Seekers

Book Review   by:Sona Damania     Original Author: Rosamunde Pilcher
ª

Rosamunde Pilcher has written a number of books, all of them masterpieces in their own right. The Shell Seekers, may on surmising the back cover seem like an ordinary country background based writing that is comforting to read but not only is it most soothing in its flow, it is also most enchanting as Pilcher takes us through the journey of Penelope Keeling's life who is an extraordinary woman in the sunset phase of her life. She has a Bohemian upbringing with a French mother and a father who is a renowned artist of his time. Having seen war and changing circumstances through which the love of her family has stayed steadfast and enduring, she holds firmly within herself the values that combine independence and sensitivity. Her three children are leading their own lives, each having found their own mechanism for survival – lives that do not include her existence. They have unfortunately not inherited any of her qualities, except Olivia who if not sensitive at least respects her mother’s need for solitude and her preference of lifestyle. The other two, Nancy and Noel are dissatisfied with their own unfulfilled routines and lack of success and would like to have a piece of their mother’s potential fortune if she decides to sell her father’s paintings which are now worth a fortune in the art world. These works mean the world to Penelope who has no intention of parting with her beloved father’s memories. Every page is a delight and as you savour the intelligently and tastefully written details of the people who are a part of this carefully woven tapestry, it takes a minute after ever few pages to ingest the beauty of the rendition. The magic of “The Shell seekers” lies in the intricacy of the prose, the language that depicts so wonderfully the inroads of life, of characters that come to life as she describes their facets and personalities. It tells a story, of love and acceptance, of people in trying times who stand beside each other with no regard to financial positioning, who respect each other for who they are, of friends that are sometimes more dear than family. Rosamunde creates a world in which the readers lose themselves. Her vivid descriptions of nature and countryside charm and her representation of attitudes and bearings of different human beings casts a spell that holds till the end. The book is the carriage of Penelope who leads a life of grace and dignity amongst a deprecating world and protects the memoirs of her past, her reminiscences of her father and mother which are her legacy for life. A touching and poignant piece of prose, an excellent read.
