Love, they say, involves a lot of sacrifice. And this story, I believe, is a perfect example of such. It does not only talk about the love that the two main characters shared, but also of an unconditional love that only a family can bring.
Landon Carter, as described by Sparks, is a typical teenage boy. At seventeen, he joins his friends in doing crazy pranks, in teasing about the way their classmates dress, and in gossiping around about other people's lives - and Jamie Sullivan was not an exception to these. Jamie, the only daughter of Rev. Hegbert Sullivan and who's mother already died, is the epitome of a simple young lady. She is sweet, kind, soft-spoken, and most of all, God-fearing, but exudes such grace and mystery. Yet, even with her seemingly-perfect personality, Jamie is often the target for bullying of Landon's friends. Then, one play, which Landon and Jamie are part of, changes everything. The boy who once swore not to fall in love with this lady geek wasn't able to keep up with his promise. Landon and Jamie had a beautiful start and took a lot of walks during their dates. But, Landon later finds out that his lady love has leukemia, a disease that would soon take away Jamie's life. At first, Landon was mad. He didn't understand why these things happen and why Jamie hid it from him. But, soon, he finds himself doing things he thought he never could - all for the love of Jamie. In the end, Landon was determined to fulfill Jamie's top wish - to get married in the church where her mom also did. So on a sunny autumn day, with an aching and weak body, Jamie had to make the greatest walk of her life. Certainly, it was a walk to remember.
The story was put into the big screen in 2002 and was starred by Mandy Moore and Shane West. It gained good reviews from the general public, but it had a different approach of telling the story though [compared to the book]. I personally think that the 'book version' is better and and that it gave much justice to its title,
A Walk to Remember. But, I must also say that Shane West did a very good job in portraying his character in the movie. Nevertheless,
A Walk to Remember is a must-read.
