Vamps and the City is the second book in author Kerrelyn
Sparks Love at Stake Series. In the
second book in the Love at Stake series the result of coven master Roman Dragonesti falling
in love with dentist Shanna Whelan (see Love at Stake Series Book 1: How to
Marry a millionaire Vampire) is that Roman has decided to get rid of his harem.
The ladies of the harem some of which were born during eras where they did not
work but were supported by their husband or other male relative are left at
loose ends.
One of the members of the harem former news anchor Darcy
Newhart has decided that she wants to take control of her life and get another
job in the media. Because she was a news anchor in the human world and was
fairly well known and because the mystery of her disappearance would alert
humans if she were recognized Darcy has only option for a job. She applies for
a job at DVN or the Digital Vampire Network. When she has an interview with
Sylvester Bacchus she is informed that he can’t hire her for a job as a news
anchor because she is a women. Frustrated with the older vampire’s mentality
about women she negotiates with him and lads the job of the director of a new
reality which she pitched.
The title of the reality show is The Sexiest Man on Earth
and she conceives of this idea for the older vampire harem members that want a
new master to take of them. The prize of this show is that the winner will get
a million dollars and will be the harems new master.
Because of the vampires beliefs that only vampires are
superior and could possibly win the contest Darcy decides to insert some humans
in the contest to add a twist to the reality show. A C.I.A stake out team of
psychic vampire slayers insert two undercover agents into the reality show. One
of the agents using the name of Adam is attracted to Darcy and believes her to
be one of the humans that works for the station.
When he finds out that Darcy is in reality a vampire he must
find a way to accept that the woman he loves is a vampire. And when he ends up
winning the contest it angers a lot of people who expected to win. A solution
to the problem is turning him into a vampire. Adam who is in reality c.i.a
agent Austin Erickson decided to give the prize money to the harem and tells
them that he doesn’t need to be their master that they only need money to get
themselves financially stable.
Meanwhile Darcy has retreated into hiding afraid that as a
vampire she is bad for him. Darcy longs to be human again to be with Austin and
to once again be in the sun.
With Austin gives Roman a sample of blood found on a knife
the night Darcy disappeared Roman is able to put one of his experimental
theories into action and restore Darcy as a human.
Austin who was fired from his slayer job accepts a job with
a vampire run security firm. Having learned through the whole ordeal that there
are good modern vamps that drink synthetic blood from a bottle and the bad
malcontent vamps that attack human.
Dacy and Austin stay together but work within the vampire
world.
