A girl from the country gets an education in the ways of London society from a notorious Earl and his friends.
Millicent
Blair has come to London to help her Aunt Beatrice who is recovering from a broken ankle. Aunt Beatrice is actually Lord Truefitt, society gossip columnist. Millicent acts as her aunt’s eyes and ears at balls and other social gatherings. Watching and listening is hard work, particularly when one has to be discrete. Everyone wants to know who Lord Truefitt actually is and how he manages to obtain his information. The Earl of Dunraven and his two best friends, collectively
known as the Terrible Threesome, have gone so far as to hire a private investigator (also known as a bow street Runner) to discover Lord Truefitt’s identity.
Someone has stolen a family heirloom from Chandler Prestwick, Earl of Dunraven. The earl is determined to catch the culprit. Rumor (according to Lord Truefitt) has it, the Mad Ton Thief has struck again; but, Chandler doesn’t believe most of what he reads in the gossip columns. He has seen too many of his own exploits blown completely out of proportion in the
scandal sheets. When Chandler sees Millicent taking notes at several parties, he thinks she is working with the Thief. A few stray facts and a heaping dose of speculation combine to make a dash of scandal.
