My Lady Notorious

Book Review by: Serenity Baxter

Original Author: Beverley, Jo
A disgraced heiress employs unusual methods to gain the aid of an army captain.
The Earl of Walgrave is known as the
Incorruptible. He’s an inflexible man who has alienated most of polite society, including his sons and daughters. The Earl insists that his daughters marry into a wealthy family that isn’t noble, by birth or deed. His daughter Verity agrees to do her duty, even though she loves someone else. His daughter Chastity however, resists. The earl forces his younger daughter into a compromising position and still she refuses to marry a man she finds loathsome. Furious, the old Earl imprisons his daughter on a remote country estate.
Verity’s husband dies in the arms of his mistress. She tries to get in touch with her old sweetheart, but her father refuses to allow her to see him. When Verity gives birth to a son, she has reason to believe her brother in law will try to kill the child to gain the inheritance. She retreats to the old country estate seeking sanctuary and finds her sister. Verity is certain that her childhood sweetheart will help if only she can contact him. The siblings come up with a plan so that they can both escape their tyrannical male relatives. They will pose as highwaymen until they can raise enough money to travel across country.
Captain Cynric Malloren is bored. He’s been confined due to illness and his protective family won’t believe he’s up to rejoining his regiment. He reluctantly agrees to visit a relative in the country so that he can build up his strength. On the way to the estate, the coach is robbed. Sensing a chance for adventure, Cyn insists on accompanying the robbers to their hideout. When he finds out the thieves are women, Cyn pledges to do everything in his power to help them. Verity is willing to take any help she can get and gratefully accepts his offer. Judging by his almost effeminate beauty, Chastity doesn’t believe an army captain will be much help. The youngest brother of a rich and powerful Marquess is about to demonstrate the virtues of Cyn.
