Something Wonderful

Book Review by: geeto

Original Author: Judith McNaught
This is a charming book by Judith McNaught.Alexandra Lawrence is the heroine who charms the reader right from the very first
encounter. She has all the skills of a tomboy and none of the well-born lady she is. She is also courageous, gentle and devoted to those she loves. Into her life came Jordan Townsende, Duke of Hawthorne and soon turmoil reigns. A selfless act on her part results in Alexandra wedding the cynical Duke. However their relationship appears to be doomed due to what the Duke believes to be duplicity on Alexandra''s part.Just as they appear to be reaching an understanding, Jordan Townsende disappears. Alexandra is left with shattered dreams and memories of cherished moments spent with her husband. However, as she faces the cruel, critical eyes of the haute ton, she realizes that her image of Jordan is a tarnished one. She is made miserable by the knowledge of husband’s callous and selfish intentions. She succeeds in bringing London society to her feet. When the Duke returns, he finds her changed beyond belief and seemingly resistant to his demands. He sees her as a challenge while being attracted to her innocence, honesty and charm. Added to this is the constant threat to his life. In spite of his growing to Alexandra, he is convinced that she is the culprit.
Proof of Alexandra’s innocence is revealed in violent manner and he almost loses his wife. Truth and love finally prevail and the Duke finds all that is wonderful.Descriptions of London society is reminiscent of Georgette Heyer''s novels. The writer portrays her characters with keen sensitivity. Every character is skillfully drawn- the proud Dowager Duchess, Penrose and Filbert, the faithful retainers, Roddy Carstairs, man of the town and host of others.A book to provide you with marvellous company on quiet evenings.
