Many people are familiar with Gerald Durrell''s autobiographical books based around his animal collecting adventures, such
as My Family and other Animals, and A Zoo in my Luggage. The possibly less well known Rosy is my Relative, however, is a novel. It is the story of Adrian Rookwhistle, who inherits Rosy, an ex circus
elephant with a liking for the occasional drink, and sets off to find a new circus home for her. In the process, of course, the two meet a series of colourful people and a few near disasters, and Adrian finds that perhaps he doesn''t really want to lose Rosy at all...This is a very amusing and
heartwarming story, peopled with eccentric characters and ridiculous situations. Well worth a read. And a re-read. One of Durrell''s best.
