In the dark kingdom of Uberwald,
country of the vampires, werewolves, trolls and dwarves, a great event is going to happen: the crowning of the king of dwarves. Despite the existence of the official group of diplomats and all kind of politicians specialized on external politics, the Patrician chooses Samuel Vimes to represent Ankh-Morpork at the ceremony and to enquire at the same time the disappearance of an extremely important
dwarf relic, that threatens to lead to an underground war.
The amusing part is that Sam Vimes hates vampires, werewolves, trolls and dwarves (humans too, which excuses him) but his escort also contains a dwarf and a troll, members of two species that traditionally
hate each other.
Things get complicated when Vimes arrives in Uberwald, because the most important family of
werewolves doesn’t like him, but they don’t like
vampires either, while the latter (represented by a countess) want to help Vimes, who, at his turn, hate all the deads that still move, including the family of Igors that provide servants to all the rich families.
As if it wasn’t enough, Angua
quits the Guard to return into her country and solve the problems, knowing that her family is not innocent,
captain Carrot quits so he can follow her, so at the head of the Guard gets sergeant Colon, totally unprepared to become officer… A total disaster.
