A Game of Thrones

Book Review by: Lary Sparks

Original Author: George R.R. Martin
In the spirit of Tolkien and the massive tomes of Tad
Williams comes A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin's

fantasy epic that opens with the aptly titled A Game of
Thrones, follows with A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords
and finishes with A Feast For Crows. Not for the faint of
heart or easy reading these works are in excess of 1000
pages each and written for an adult audience that both
understands and embraces the harsher realities of a world of
knights and Kings at war. Don't let the concept of Knights
and war limit you though, The key players are women and the
books are filled with enough surprises and twists of plot to
keep you reading late into the night. In truth this work is
the beautiful interweaving of three to six stories depending
on how you separate them. A Song of Ice and Fire is story to
make you laugh, cry, cheer and throw the book down in
despair, only to recover it again and seek the resolution.
In this first look we discovery the land of Westeros, the
remains of the seven kingdoms and the major players people
this book. The adventure begins with a boisterous King
Robert, the stalwart Neddard Stark, lord of castle
Winterfell and the plotting Lannister family, lords of
Casterly Rock. Eventually we realize that not all as it
seems; Robert is a usurper, the true heir yet lives, and
magic, and mayhem are yet yet to return to the land now with
new kings named throughout. With a cast of thousands,
treachery, intrigue all around and war afoot as well as a
busload of characters that will appeal or appall you, this
works is a magnum opus. Martin will stand with the greatest
storytellers ever, leaving A Song of Ice and Fire as a
brilliant legacy of fantasy literature for all time.
