NEXT

Book Review by: jiroXume

Original Author: Michael Crichton
Michael Crichton the writer of Jurassic Park, Timeline, Prey and also the creator of  ER spun another story which is
interesting but yet debatable.
"NEXT" which expose you to the world of genetics. The world that is fast, furious and uncontrolable. The story spun around the genetics world, where it questions the need of gene patenting in today's world. Gene patenting contradicts the long-established traditions of intellectual property protection. We are living in the time were one fifth of all OUR GENES ARE OWNED by someone else. It is overwhelming to now that we are own by someone or someother institution.
In the author's note, he debated that genes are facts of nature. Sunlight, gravity and tree leaves are facts of nature. We can't simply patent a gene like we patent our invention because it is simply exist in nature and we can't innovate any other uses of the patent without violating the patent itself. The message of the author is STOP PATENTING GENES.
And in this book itself, the author cleverly devises the facts and blends it with fiction where he foresee the future of biogenetics engineering.
Going throught the book we go through a series of questions like; Are BLONDES becoming EXTINCT? Humans and chimpanzeez differ in only 400 genes; is that why a chimp fetus RESEMBLES a HUMAN BEING? And should that worry us?
In all, 'NEXT' challenges our norm of reality and notions of morality. It is bizzare, exciting and yet disturbing as it leaves us with SHOCKING facts, shatter our common assumption where we least expected.
