Ogilvy, an astronomer, and the narrator of the story saw through the former''s telescope brilliant flashes of gas shooting from Mars and travelling earthward at great speed. These flashes turned out to be cylinders which it contained Martians. The latter were simply soft round masses with two eyes and long tentacles.
Swiftly, the Martians built
robot soldiers and guns which they had brought along in their cylinders. With this, they cannonaded the countrysides, destroyed English communities,
killed British troops and civilians, and even sank ships.
The narrator evacuated his wife to Leatherland, another
village, where their cousins lived. Then he went back to their hoome and village where the Martians had first landed. He saw the Martian robots tramping around destroying everything along their path. London was invaded next, the millions of people there panicked.
In his own village, the narrator wandered around witnessing the Martians destroying everything. He hid in cellars. One time a Martian almmost got him, omly he covered himself with with coal. Then, suddenly there was quiet when he came out he discovered the robot broken and the Martians inside wer dead. The
bacteria on
earth had killed the Martians. There was no bacteria in Mars, hence they were not resistant to this microscopic forms of life on earth.
