Coraline is a story about a different world, which is located near us, and the door that has
closed should remain closed.
A girl named Coraline (also commonly mistaken with the name Caroline) has
moved, along with her
parents, to an old building where lives no one
but old ladies. They are obsessed with dogs and an old, and a bit
insane man, a mice circus in training. Therefore, it is not surprising
that koralina feels lost- she doesnt go to school (its summer), her
parents dont have time for her, and she has nothing to do. She begins
to explore the house and doesn''t find anything interesting but a door which always remains
closed. As we can figure, the girl begins to turn
into an "Alice in Wonderland" and passes through the door once it
opens. Unfortunately, she doesn''t find a magical world like did Alice.
She ends up in a parraleel worled, which in turne remineds her of her
home. The same things, the same residents, and even her alternative
parents are there. It seems like everyone has been waiting for her,
except there is one problem- instead of a pair of eyes everyone
has...buttons.
Either way, Coraline likes the place. Her "new" parents have time for
her, play with her, make her food, and are there just to satisfy her
needs. Despite this, it keeps reader thinking they have no good
intentions towards her. This is due to the descriptions of this other
world that Neil Gaiman uses, which only reminded me of one word- sick.
This World is straight-up evil. Even Coraline convinces us that this is
true through her secret warnings. Unfortunately, she cannot return to
the real world. It turns out her second mother is a creator of this
world, which ends behind the fence of the house, and she creates
absolute fear for everyone. Coraline then ends up in a difficult
situation. She figures out that an intention her new mother has is to
saw two buttons to her face, in place of her eyes, and free her sould,
just like she has done to her previous children. Wanting to escape, the
girl neds to find, hidden in different places in the house, the lost
souls. This is when we begin to realize the beauty of this irrational
world. It is only here, where a dog-theater, where you can win
chocolates is possible, and where a fight with a snail-like father,
destroyed by his wife turns to reality. Neil Gaiman wrote a book which,
despite the context, may be a pretty surprising and interesting story,
and due to the climate can become very scary and frightening. I
reccomend it for kids of all ages.
