The Best There is
As a sci-fi writer I have read most works by the “Greats”. I won’t name them here as to do so would bore you stiff (and me!), and would be totally pointless anyhow. I shall deal with each one in turn as they come to mind. I don’t why, but the first author that sprang to mind was Ray Bradbury, I guess his Golden Apples of the Sun was largely responsible for my own attempts to become a sci-fi writer, although I hasten to add my ramblings could never match his in a month of Sundays!
Ray Bradbury deserves all the plaudits he’s accrued over the years, his imaginative writing gave many the pleasure of living in another world for the length of the book in question. Certainly, after the afore-mentioned book it was Fahrenheit 451 that whetted my appetite for more, that one story was instrumental in firing my imagination into orbit! When you consider when they were written you begin to see how far ahead he was able to “see”.
Many times I have struggled kindling a story to write, but with Ray Bradbury it appears he had few problems in taking the seed of a story to propagation, and on to fruition. It seems he is also able to write on very diverse subjects, which is something you will realise once you get the bug. Should you require an excellent read at any time, I can recommend any of Ray Bradbury’s short stories or novels, as something to fill your winter evenings by the fire; who says it has to be winter?
