Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone

Book Review   by:Amber Noel     Original Author: J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone is the first of a seven book series (books 1-6 have been published and book 7 will be published when it is ready) that follows the life of Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling has written a powerful story that draws its readers in from the first page of the first book and keeps them captivated until the very end.

Harry Potter has gone through childhood not knowing what destiny awaits him. Raised by his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon he has been made to feel as if he is a lesser person than their son Dudley. That all changes when one day he receives a letter from a curious place called Hogwarts. Uncle Vernon tries to prevent Harry from reading his letter, but eventually Harry gets a visit from Hagrid the Hogwarts keeper of keys and grounds (as well as an advid magical creature caretaker) who has come to bring Harry to the Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

While Harry was growing up away from anything having to do with magic his name had become a legend in the magical world. Before Harry lost his parents and before he was brought to live with Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Dudley the magical world was terrorized by an evil wizard known as Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort's rein of terror ended when he targeted a small boy. Voldemort tried to kill this boy, but his spell backfired leaving a lightening bolt shaped scar on the child's forehead and him a weakened creature that was less than human. That boy was Harry Potter and when he returns to the magical world he is revered as a hero and celebrity. After all, the boy with the scar had done something as a baby that no grown-up wizard had been able to do. He had defeated he-who-must-not-be-named.

Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone is the beginning of Harry's reintroduction to the wizarding world. He begins his first year of Hogwarts and must learn how to use his magical abilities. He takes potions classes with his most hated teacher Professor Snape, learns transfiguration from Professor McGonagall, and begins defense against the dark arts classes with Professor Quirrell. Together with his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger he figures out that the sorceror's stone has been hidden somewhere in Hogwarts and it's up to him and his friends to get it before he-who-must-not-be-named gets to it and returns to full power.
