Song of Susannah - The Dark Tower, Book 6

Book Review by: Aude22

Original Author: Stephen King
This abstract was translated from Le Chant de Susannah - La Tour Sombre, Vol. 6
After several traumatizing events during its trip with Roland and Eddie, Susannah is pregnant. This baby is not common, because
his father is not common. To free the young Jake, Susannah had to bear the assaults of a devil. Since, the signs of her next maternity multiply, and especially, a new personality appeared in her spirit : Mia (meaning "mother", in the ancient language of Roland). And now that her baby is about to arrive, it is Mia who takes control of the young lady''s body, and who makes her leave the "ka-tet" (the group, in other words). Eddie, Jake and Roland dash in his pursuit, without forgetting however their mission: protect the Tower and Rose who is associated with him, this flower which grows on a piece of waste ground in New York, belonging to Calvin Tower. The father Callahan, ancient priest whom the fans of King had met in "Salem", joins the basic ka-Tet. Callahan came to New York, where he died, some years later, pursued by the " ignoble ", strange creatures devoted to King Cramoisi, who wants to bring down the Tower, and see collapsing all the universes. After its death, Callahan went in Calla, and by supporting pistoleros against wolves, he understands that he has a role to play in Roland''s quest.
That''s the reason why, when Susannah disappears in New York in 1999, he follows his new companions. But the passage is fragile, and the group is separated. Roland and Eddie land in 1977, in a small village where gangsters wait for them. It is also there that Tower took refuge with its friend Deepneau. As for Jake and Callahan, they meet themselves again in 1999, in New York.
The young boy and the ageing father follow the runway of Susannah / Mia up to a hotel, where they find the thirteenth black, a malefic ball with an immense power. It is it which allowed Mia to leave Calla. Conscious of the danger which it represents, they decide to hide it in a deposit of the World Trade Center, that must last until 2002. In this body which she doesn''t control anymore, Susannah manages in best the situation.
Susannah discovers that Mia is not another personality of its spirit, but real intruder. She also understands that her child is not the one of a devil, but of Roland, and king Cramoisi himself, via a Machiavellian process. And especially, she il pulled between the almighty urge to fight against Mia to take back the control, and that, also so powerful, to help Mia, because her little guy is also hers, and because she understands what the other feels.
From their part, Eddie and Roland push away the bandits attack, thanks to a "folken" (a guy of the place), John Cullum.
Thanks to him, pistoleros runs away from the battlefield. Then, they meet Calvin Tower who settled down without really taking precautions, unconscious of the danger which presses on him, with its friend Deepneau.
Roland and Eddie so obtain the property of the ground where the Rose grows. Finally, both pistoleros leave to see the one who seems in the center of their existence, even of their quest, namely... Stephen King himself!
During this decisive meeting they are going to learn on themselves, and on their quest, to discover that their life, as the one of Callahan, is the fruit of the imagination of this man.
As for Jake and Callahan, they finally discover the den where Mia, blinded by the ignoble''s promises, went to give birth.
It is one of the New York "bases" of the henchmen of King Cramoisi. Mia comes to give back to them her child, Mordred, in exchange for the fragile promise to be able to take care of him during some time.
The boy and the ancient priest penetrate into this cave to pull Susannah out of this tight spot. The story is absolutely fabulous. Since the lst episode of this legend, up to this last but one volume, road has been crossed! King develops an absolutely unique developement, precise and with an horrifying complexity.
An important part of the scenes ask as many questions as they resolve some. Winks more or less supported in other famous fictions are added to it (in particular, let us quote Harry Potter and Star Wars), and certain speak, unique, that I partially took in this summary ("ka-Tet", " folken ", but there are many others!).
However, the most extraordinarily surprising part is with no doubt this final where the author brings himself in the story. He doesn''t embellish himself, does not decrease either. It is there the mark of a talented writer : manage to stage himself as he would have made it for any character. The role he plays in this story is at once decisive and secondary, but what especially matters, is that by taking part in this book as author of the Tower Sinks, this story we read, the narrative text takes an exceptional dimension, giving to this imaginary weft a terribly realistic aspect. It''s the real masterstroke of which Stephen King makes a success, and we have only one single desire by closing the book: read the ultimate volume of this fascinating story. So now, I say thank you.
