The Drawing of the Three remains my favourite Stephen King book in his Dark Tower series. Apart from the thankfully
brief ramblings when introducing Odetta Holmes and her other persona Detta Walker, the story is both compelling and funny.
The best and the funniest part of the book for me was when Roland “shanghaied” Jack Mort’s body to buy the penicillin his physical body in Mid-World needs to recover from an infection. The surprise of the pharmacist at being robbed not for addictive drugs or money but medicine is
absolutely hilarious. The next would be Eddie Dean's ironic declaration that despite the fact that Roland had drawn first a heroine junkie then a
schizophrenic would be murderess, Roland would of course choose to continue instead of ending his quest while they were ahead.
It is here as well that Roland’s relentless determination most shows. Despite his rapidly declining health from the infection, Roland absolutely refused to give up the Tower at any time. There is something heroic and almost noble in that.
