The first part of the book tells of 2 things; how
Roland, Eddie and Susannah finds the portal of the Bear from which they
can find the road to the Dark Tower and how Jake comes to join
Roland’s group in Mid-World. The second part of the book then tells of their arrival in the once great city of Lud, Roland and Oy’s rescue of Jake who has been abducted by some of the inhabitants of the city and the group’s departure from Lud via a crazed monorail, Blaine. The
gunslingers are once again on the road at the end of the book.
The best parts of this tale is Jake, Roland and Oy’s story. I laughed when Oy scrambled onto Jake’s feet when it appeared as if they were flying. I could feel Roland’s anger when he found traces of Jake’s blood during his pursuit and his vow to kill Gasher if he had harmed Jake in any way. I understood Oy’s impatience and exhortations of ‘Ake-Ake to get Roland moving whenever he stopped. Whatever their blood ties, Jake, Roland and Oy are a family and that is why I always enjoy reading about them.
