Anna and
Charles are married and living in the Marrok's pack but things are not settled. Anna still suffers from what
her original pack did to her in the first excerpt of their story in On the Prowl and cannot quite let herself relax much even around
Charles. Charles and Bran are at odds about Bran attending a conference in Seattle about the werewolves coming out in society in the beginning of the book. An agreement is reached so Anna and Charles attend instead.
They travel to Seattle and meet a troll as well as a fae named Dana who will maintain order at the meeting. They meet with the European werewolves who are threatened into submission by
Chastel, a werewolf who could easily be Bran's European equivalent but doesn't want the job. Chastel instigates mayhem amongst the Alphas who are present and Anna's uneasiness around the Alphas causes problems at the meetings as all feel they need to protect her as an Omega.
Anna, a blind white witch named Moira and Moira's husband, a werewolf named Tom whose Alpha, Angus, is the host of the meeting, are quickly urged by Charles to leave to pursue the womanly art of shopping. Anna begins to relax a bit around Moira and Tom as they shop for clothes, shoes and Christmas presents but that quickly comes to an end when they are attacked by a pack of vampires.
Anna, Tom and Moira manage to fight them off thanks to Moira's unknown ability to call sunlight but not before Anna unconsciously draws on Charles's power. They make it undetected back to the hotel Anna and Charles are staying in but Tom was hurt in the fight. When Charles and Angus arrive, she tells them she believes they were helped by a werewolf.
That night, after moving rooms, Charles and Anna go to meet another werewolf, Arthur and his wife Sunny. Arthur tells Anna that he is a reincarnated version of King Arthur and even shows her what he believes to be Excalibur. In the following days, Anna meets another Omega wolf and they discuss the way the packs should treat them.
Anna decides to participate in a controlled and bloodless hunt despite the fact that Charles cannot, but she is not alone because she has a few allies in her corner. At the end of the hunt, Chastel's wolf presents his prize to her which leads to an attack by Charles that could lead to both of their deaths. They are both spared but only by a technicality.
Anna and Charles return to their hotel to sleep when they are disturbed by Angus who tells them Chastel was murdered and Charles is the prime suspect. It soon becomes a fight for Charles's life and Anna is the only one who can save him from an unexpected predator.
