In the seven kingdoms, not everyone is born normal. those who come into the world more special than others are called Gracelings; each possessing a special power called a Grace, and two different colored eyes. For 19-year-old, green and blue eyed Katsa, having such a skill should be a blessing, but being Graced with killing will always be a curse to her. She is the niece of King Randa of the Middluns, and instead of enjoying her status, she is forced to dispose of the king's enemies. The entire kingdom despises her Grace, and little do they know, so does she.
An unanticipated visitor comes to the palace, the gold and silver eyed Prince Po of Lienid, Graced with combat skills. Katsa slowly becomes friends with Po after discovering him to be the only person who is her equal in battle. The two warriors embark on a journey together to find the captors of the prince's grandfather.
