The full title of the book is “The Time Machine-An Invention”
The idea of travelling through time was basically formed
by Herbert George Wells. His idea of travelling through ‘the fourth dimension’ (ok, this would no longer be considered scientifically correct, but this was written in Victorian times) has influenced the scientific psyche since then. And no wonder. It is such a powerful idea-to see what the future will hold and to see at first hand the past. Considering our short space of time on this globe it is no wonder (Sorry I’ve got a bit depressing).
The idea of formulating two descendants of the current human race-the beautiful Eloi and the ugly Morlocks shows an influence of Darwin’s ideas, whatever you think of him. Since there are usually two
opposing forces or ‘gangs’ which seem to corrupt or change a particular society, two opposing species (Are they species? Well I’m just going to say they are) is the most extreme example of this.
The Eloi could be the
photogenic Hollywoodesque types and the Morlocks could be the next stage for the common Joe and Joanne. But the idea that photogenic types could take over the world is ridiculous. Ok, it’s not that ridiculous. Whether or not it will actually go as far as this only time will tell. And as referred to above we won’t see it.
But this doesn’t mean that you can only read this book if you’re a scientist. This book is written in very simplistic style and can be read by adults and children alike.
Unfortunately this book gives no idea on how you should build a time machine-it’s no good just having levers-any piece of machinery can have levers. It does look like the scientists are going to have to do more research.
It would be a wonderful invention though. If you do invent it, please don’t forget to register the patent!
