The Elfstones of Shannara

Book Review by: Elizabeth Ann Wendt

Original Author: Terry Brooks
All the books are following the lineage of the Shannara family.  Shannara was the name of an elven king. It''s a fantasy
story about elves that had great magic and where they find ruins of an ancient civilization that was destroyed by a war that began and ended by a push of a button.  In the story of the Elfstones Wil Ohmsford was the first Man ever accepted into the all-Gnome school of Healing.  Wil had inherited the elfstones and thought he had no use for such a weapon. However, a new threat was on the horizon. Guardian of the Forbidding,The Ellcrys, was dying after thousands of years of holding back the Demon hordes. Eventine Elessedil, King of the Elves had grown old now, and knew he could not protect his people against such an adversary now that the Elves were without magic and meer mortals.  Allanon, presumed dead after the battle with the Warlock Lord, had returned. He called upon a hesitant Wil Ohmsford to protect Amberle Elessedil ,who was the last surviving chosen guardian of the Ellcrys. Meanwhile, Allanon, helped lead the fight against the Demons once the Forbidding wall had fallen. Ander Elessedil,  the uncertain Elven prince joined him. Wil''s task was to lead Amberle to Arborlon, the Elven capital, where she could recover a seed from the Ellcrys, so that a new tree would hopefully grow. The only way to make the seed grow would be to travel to the Bloodfire, source of the earth''s magic, and immerse the seed in the flames.  Wil did not have enough elven blood to invoke the power of the Elfstones when he needed them.  He and Amberle barely escaped the wrath of the Reaper and began to grow close along the way.    But their love was not to be.  Wil finally overcame his fear of the Elfstones and used them against the Reaper, Amberle realized the destiny of her quest. As she came to the end of her odyssey , she took in the seed and the flames of the Bloodfire, and became the new Ellcrys which secured the Forbidding once again. Wil was heartbroken; Allanon could not explain to him that it was necessary to hide the truth from Wil, and Wil felt betrayed by the old Druid.  Wil,returned home forever scarred and distrustful of the half-truths of Druids.
