Yet another brillian science fiction/
cyberpunk novel from one of the creators of the genre.
Writing cyberpunk for as long as Mr. Sterling certainly gives an author both an edge and and a grip on a subject that easily eludes other writers.
In a not too distant future, the world is ruled by old
people, as they are the ones with all the wealth, and young people are no loonger allowed to live eventful lives, or actually have any real fun at all. Enter Mia Ziemann, age 93. Undegoing a new and experimental procedure which will amke her body as if it was 30 again, and the reader is taken on a fascinating journey through some of the problematic obstacles of this "modern"
society.
The
story catches speed when the rejuvenating effects also starts to affect Mia's brain, and
quickly she escapes from the facility holding of the experiment, on the fly changing her name to Maya, ready to live life as an energetic youth once again. She quickly discovers how numb and tight all of society has become, and is forced to join with a band of illegal party-goes, just to have a bit of fun that isn't made by the governmentally supplied halocinogetic chems.
The story challenges many views about the
greater good, and the question arises: wo does define what the greater good is, and greater good for whom? Definately a must-read for fans of both Sterling and cyberpunk.
