Emotional
intelligence. Daniel Goleman explores deeply the parallel
world of the emotions and its powerful influence
in our existence. The emotional brain, the nature of the
emotional intelligence, the characteristics of the emotional mind and how
emotions are processed in metabolic terms are some of the important subjects
explored in the book. The work of Dr. Goleman tries to break out many old paradigms
about the way of thinking (“perceive” would be a better term) in relation to
the roles of the emotions in our lives. Our species lives a dramatic emotional
crisis: Hideous crimes, suicides, abuse of drugs and other alarming signs
attest that. All this is reflex, in the author’s opinions, of a culture that
only value the intellect, relegating to the forgetfulness the individual''s
emotional side. The great majority of us were educated, starting from our
childhood, how to interact, to work, to develop, to manage and to lead our
thoughts much more than our feelings, maybe because our thoughts are closer of
our control and psychological conscience than our emotions. However,
the new paradigm that’s being formed brings the concept that “we tend to act
more based on what we feel than what we think” even, or especially, when we
aren’t aware of. The world of the feelings and the world of the intellect are
two things completely different acting along the life in synergistic ways. Is
necessary an essential maturation of the emotional side. The intellectual process
of maturing isn’t obligatorily associated with the development of our interior
relationship with our feelings, wills and desires. This can have disastrous consequences;
an emotionally immature person can destroy her private life, relationships and
professional life, even having culture and academic formation. On the other hand, although there are points that
determine the temperament, many of the cerebral circuits of the mind are
malleable, they can be worked and, therefore, temperament isn’t destiny, we’re
not victims or the product of our genetic or cultural influence. Emotional
intelligence is certainly an important work for those who try to immerse in
themselves a little more and develop the aspects more noblemen of intelligence.
