Who Moved My Cheese

Book Review by: Darshan

Original Author: Dr. Spencer Johnson
This book describes basically human nature in dealing with ‘change ‘. ‘Change’ that is inevitable in everybody’s lives. The
author has represented “Cheese” as happiness we are always trying to seek and be complacent. Author has made use of four characters, two mice, "Sniff" and "Scurry", and two little people, miniature humans in essence, "Hem" and "Haw". At start they are looking for cheese and they find a large station of cheese. Content with their find, the humans establish routines around their daily intake of cheese slowly becoming arrogant in the process. They do away with their shoes which helped them to find the cheese and relax. One day Sniff and Scurry coming to station find that the cheese is gone and the station is empty. Not surprised they put on their shoes which they always put on their necks with laces they start to find new station (happiness). Hem and Haw arrive at Cheese Station C only to find the same thing, no cheese. Angered and annoyed, Hem demands "who moved my cheese?". Unprepared the humans totally depended on the cheese and assumed it to constant forever. They come the next day again to find the same empty station. Beginning to realize the situation at hand, Haw proposes a search for new cheese, but Hem, is still very reluctant and not ready to move. Angry about how can anybody move HIS cheese. Meanwhile, Sniff and Scurry have found "Cheese Station N", a new supply of cheese. Haw is very afraid of reentering the Maze and to be in the unknown dark areas and also not sure where to find cheese. But he confronts his change avoiding extinction and enters the maze. Slowly he builds put confidence and his fear decreases and he starts enjoying life. Many times he is let down to find empty stations and old cheese. After another empty cheese station, Haw decides to go back for Hem with the few bits of new cheese he has managed to find.
Uncompromising, Hem turns away the new cheese to his friend''s dismay. With knowledge acquired along the way, Haw heads back into the maze. Still going deeper into the maze, impelled by bits of new cheese here and there, Haw leaves a trail of writings on the wall, hopeful that his friend will be aided by them in his search for new cheese. Still traveling, Haw one day comes across Cheese Station N. Abundant with cheese, some varieties strange to him, he has found what he is looking for. After eating, Haw reflects on his experience.
Cautious from past experience, Haw inspects Cheese Station N daily and explores different parts of the maze to prevent complacency from setting in. After hearing movement in the maze one day, Haw realizes someone is approaching the station. Unsure, Haw hopes that it is his friend Hem who has found the way.
