Women on Top

Book Review by: Ishitat

Original Author: Seema Goswami
While you read the theme and the overview this is a short 200 pager book with colorful book cover. This book deals with a
routine problem for any working women in today’s world, may not be true for a global picture but however the author has dealt this with Indian context.
Chapters like Make over your nervousness while in an interview and looks do matter gives a strong message to the working ladies about being confident, this will surely depend on a lot of other factor which the author does not consider. However her strong recommendation in this book is to put your best foot front. Seema states that one has to mask those jitters on the face while in an interview; she needs to be really confident on the knowledge of the subject at the same time she needs to be careful about certain gestures.
A strict No-No has been guided in the book about –
• Extending your arm for handshake, this may offend someone
• Do not pretend the knowledge if you do not have, the interviewer will know that very soon
• Do not drool over a topic which is not relevant, try to answer in short and crisp relies.
Once you have the job, there are further difficult task which one has to go through, as per the writer pl go slow, let that be your slogan for a few months, be a spectator, watch every thing carefully around you, do not try to plunge in something or give your special comments as soon as you enter the office, there are others in the office who may not like a new intruder. Do not Show off your knowledge that you carry from previous organization, instead stay calm and be a keen observer trust me this will help!
Your first few months in the organization must be to know your surroundings, your environment and keeping close tabs on your colleagues to figure out what makes them click.
Looking good was never so important for many women, this is one primary fact which the writer highlights in the book, dress up for yourselves, dress to look confident, pl remember your work and your looks together earns you a grade in an organization, nobody wants to talk or deal with a shabby looking person huh!
What does looking good actually mean? it certainly does not talk about having a symmetrical face, excellent flawless complexion, while it means making the best of what nature has gifted you. Be presentable is what all you need. Evolve with your personal style which reflects your personality, for, as Goswami reminds readers, "Beauty will fade, but charm lasts forever."
Seema has quite effectively lead her thoughts on the sensitive topic of Sexual Harassment at work place. This has been the talk of many women forum, I personally feel that today organizations are more vigilant than ever on this front. Many episodes are shared where a women is encountered with sexual harassment and it goes un noticed, to voice against it, they first need to know about it. A subtle remark about your posture or a gentle hand on your waist can also be considered as Sexual harassment.
Organizations today are aware of the legal obligations and are coming up with various options to share the same with all its employees, it is important that all women are aware of the same and must voice against it strongly.
Being healthy is the tip of the day which Goswami gives to all the working ladies, you are the super woman of the house and the office, you can not take your health for granted. Eat and sleep well with a proper diet is all you need to be in good shape. This will not only make you look good, but also help you do more things in less time.
The final chapter, you are the boss, `the woman on top', officially. There is no shame in bringing your feminine virtues into play at work, states Goswami. Be there and enjoy the women in you!
Although there has been quite an information shared in the book, the book misses a lot of argument which many women / men would have while reading, the book does not give you time enough to think and debate on these issues. Before you realize you end uo with the final chapter.
In case if you are a feminist, you may want to read a few sentences in the book which may provoke your thoughts. “You will never attract unwanted attention if you dress modestly”
