In this
collection of
short stories, Will Self
introduces us to the surreal and grimy world of his creation. His sharp spontaneous style of writing is flawless, as he introduces us to his characters, helps us delve deeper into their phyche. He
explores modern urban living in his own disturbing way. "Flytopia" is a surreal horror story about a man who develops an interesting kinship with the insect world. "Story for Europe" tells the tale of a business german speaking toddler from London, while "Dave too" explores the phsychological aspect of identity. "Caring, Sharing" is unexpected and worth the read. "A rock of Crack as big as the Ritz" delves into the seedy word of
drugs, dealers and the violence that comes with, from the persepective of a young ex-army officer. This plot is developed later in the collection with "The Nonce Prize", which will undoubtedly shock readers. ''Design Faults in the Volvo 760 Turbo: A Manual'' explores the world of adulterers and
unhappy marriages. The title story also touches on the theme of marriage, and goes on to explore the phyche of an unhappy man, playing mind games with an unsuspecting hitchhiker.
Overall a good, witty collection of short stories.
