Lack of
stimulation can often have a catastrophic effect ones self and state of mind. The short story the
yellow wallpaper by Charlotte Perkin Gilman illustrates the effect boredom and lack of stimulation can have on a person. The narrator an anonymous female is suffering from neurasthenia, a mental disorder triggered by stress and or anxiety. She and her husband have rented a house so she can recover from neurasthenia. Her husband forbids her to do any work and insists that she rests. The bed room where they sleep contains yellow wall
paper with chaotic patterns. Two weeks pass and her condition worsens. She spends endless hours starring at the wallpaper contemplating the figure inside who she believes is a woman behind
bars. She then thinks the smell of the wall paper has spread through out the house and she hears the woman behind bars shrieking. She believes that the woman behind bars in the wall paper is trying to escape. She then peals off the wall paper determined to help the woman escape.
Gilman’s short story the yellow wallpaper is a sad but often too true story of what happens when someone has little or no stimulation their life. As you read on and learn what the anonymous female is going through you might think is just a story. But then you might think of someone who you know a love one perhaps (who you have forgotten about) who is a resident in a
nursing home or half way house and think of them. And think that they might be going through a similar experience.
