Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood

Book Review by: Shoddycat

Original Author: Algernon Blackwood
Here is a little collection of ghost stories written in the early 1900's, an introduction written by the author himself (1938)
where he recalls his memories over the tales, some with tenderness, and others with an editors or critics eye.
I found it interesting in the way language was used back then, and what passed as a ghost story in a time slower, more regal, innocent and genteel to our own (based on our modern hussle and bussle).
The stories themselves are no more horrific than reading the Brother Grimm's fairytales, but still interesting, especially in twisting everyday objects and towns into abnormal sceens. Our perspective on horror, thanks to Hollywood, is much tainted with blood and gore, not interesting unless visually scaring the pants off us. In our modern world this book would be more suited to the boy scout jamboree, of Dad scaring his daughters on their first camping trip - as most of the tales are set in remote areas of towns or wilderness.
I found this a delightful read, well described even if the characters are sometimes a little thin. The author is noted as being the best writer of a "weird" tale, and for his time a master of the out door story.
For something a little different, or just for interests sake, I would encourage you to have a read.
