Nick Adams is the hero of several of the
stories. In ''Indian Camp'' he is a young boy who goes with his father, a doctor, to help a pregnant Indian woman through a difficult delivery.

collection ends, is set several years later. Nick becomes an adult and is psychologically shattered by his experiences in World War 1.
Other notable stories are "The Three-Day Blow", "Mr and Mrs Elliot" (apparently a caricature of T.S. Eliot and his wife), "Cross-country Snow", and "My Old Man".
"On the Quai at Smyrna" was added to the 1930 expanded edition. The collection also included vignettes about bullfighting, aside from World War I.
