Hov

Article Review by: JustinLennonHoffman

Original Author: James P. Hanley

"HOV" by James P. Hanley from The 13th Warrior Review is a plain spoken, realistic story set in a domestic setting.
It is told in third person closely to the main character, Lilly. She has just "retired" because of her abusive husband, but she got him back with murder. She's planning to dump him in a local marshy area to be swallowed by the earth. In her drive to the swamp, she takes the HOV lane. While driving, he slips down and is no longer visible. In the end, she runs from a cop only to crash.
This story starts with a lot of promise, but ends abruptly. The idea is solid but doesn't seem to be completely fleshed out. In some places the details are wonderful and really take the reader into the scene. But in others, they lack enough depth to give the reader a clear view of what's happening. The crash at the end of the story is particularly hard to imagine. If you're a writer, make sure you do your own editing as this magazine appears to be lacking in that department.
