I was living in Northern Ireland at the time when endless
free copies of SAGA
Magazine from the UK were posted through my letter box! I thought initially, they were intended for my Nigerian lodger: he, however, hotly rejected any such magazine! This magazine sells for the 50 plus group: the breakdown of this is anybody who is over 45 seems to get a FREE Copy! I wondered if perhaps our private landlord was a subscriber after all he looked about 45! Apparently not, he hadnt ordered the SAGA Magazine either:
Well the upshot of it all was that I had to deal with SAGA Magazine: it contained many interesting articles on World Travel: often very exotic places such as India, Turkey, or dynamic new world ex colony places, such as the United States of America: It revelled in telling the reader that its target readership was, wait for it /the Over 50s/; well I tended toward the professional approach and saw myself rather in career terms and carefully avoided the AGE crisis of targetting any group of individuals in a round circle of age: after all why not
WEIGHT, or RACE or CLASS!
The Magazine Editor engaged me in a free hotel stay - an opportunity for her Magazine Saga to interview me: I had to prepare a Lecture for all the others chosen for this event! It went amazingly well: but we were interviewed in French! Gosh! I though! this is ridiculous! I know I said I studied the French Language up to 17 but my
major degree was
definitely in English and Drama! No! was the reply: we want you to throw a few verbs and connections in here in French! I could feel myself get hotter and hotter: it was like some major challenge and I mustered up strength to do precisely that! SAGA magazine then bade me a fond farewell! I discovered they were researching and interviewing for a Travel Agent! I argued further:
I am a Poet and Writer in America (and of course a teacher in the UK!): No! they definitely wanted a Travel Agent!; I thought with hindsiight, /its a pity you didnt mention that before I left home/: however, I put it down to experience! No problem:
