‘New York Times’ bestselling author and wordsmith nonpareil Trevanian delivers another tour de force, this time a story set against the backdrop of the Wild West. The ‘moribund’ town of Twenty-Mile is soon to be plagued by powerfully charismatic, insane and psychopathic soi-disant patriot Lieder and his 2 ‘apostles’. The whole town is held in the thrall of these three minatory characters who await the arrival of the train carrying the silver ore from the mine farther down the mountain. The ore, which lieder at first misconstrues for pure silver, is intended to be appropriated for Lieder’s ‘crusade’- his term for driving out the immigrants who have, in his eyes, defiled his great nation and pillaged her natural resources. The tension never lets up throughout the book, and Trevanian’s trademark wit, wisdom and wry humor are in full refulgence. The sly debunking of Wild West clichés may come as no surprise to Trevanian fans; simply put, the novel is vintage Trevanian, and it will not fail to make an indelible impression in the mind of the thoughtful reader.
