The Princess Bride

Book Review by: shashankshalabh

Original Author: William Goldman
The Princess Bride is based on a novel (with the same name) written by William Goldman. This movie cast Cary Elwes (as Westley),
Robin Wright Penn (as Buttercup), Fred Savage (grandson) and Peter Falk (grandfather). The former is indisposed and the latter is reading him a story. The Princess Bride progresses with the progress in the story being read by the grandfather.
In the fictional country of Florin, on a farm, resides a pretty lady called Buttercup who finds pleasure in verbally abusing and commanding the farm boy Westley to perform the daily chores. Westley obeys Buttercup without any grudges for her, saying "as you wish". When Buttercup realizes the love for Westley, he leaves to earn a fortune in hope of marrying Buttercup.
Buttercup hears that Westley''s ship was attacked. After waiting for five years for him to return and believing him to be dead, she gets engaged to the Prince of Florin. Before their marriage, Buttercup is kidnapped by three outlaws- Vizzini, Inigo and Turk. Inigo happens to be a Spanish fencing master. While these three were taking Buttercup along with them, they are followed by a masked man in black. The man in black defeats Turk in a wrestling match and then challenges Vizzini to a battle of wits in which Vizzini dies.
Buttercup comes to know that the man in black is Westley when he says the words "as you wish". Westley narrates to her how the Dread Pirates Robert attacked his ship and after being impressed with his love story, passes his name and apprentice to Westley. Buttercup and Westley try to flee but are caught by the Prince''s soldiers. Buttercup goes to the palace with the Prince in lieu for the release of her lover. Westley, however, is taken to the Pit of Despair and tortured.
The Prince makes a deal with Buttercup according to which four ships would be sent to locate Westley and if they fail, Buttercup would have to marry the prince. On the day of wedding, Inigo and Fezzik bump into each other and together they look for Westley. Buttercup comes to know that the Prince had cheated her by not sending ship to find Westley. The infuriated Prince tortures Westley until he is dead. Inigo and Fezzik arrive at the place hearing the screams of Westley (who is now dead).
Inigo and Fezzik seek the help of the magician Miracle Max, who upraises the dead Westley. Prince Humberdinck marries Buttercup in a jiffy. Westley arrives in time when Buttedcup tries to commit suicide in her honeymoon suite. By then Inigo gets hold of Rugen and kills him, thus avenging the murder of his father. Westley decides to leave Humberdinck rather than murdering him. He also passes on his title of the Dread Pirates Robert to Inigo. Westley and Buttercup are thus reunited.
The end of The Princess Bride shows the grandson longing to hear the story again and the grandfather saying to him “as you wish”.
