John Kotter writes the most serious books on change and leadership. His latest offering, only as thick as my little finger,
about half a centimetre, is entitled Our Iceberg Is Melting. It is written so that a teenager can understand it. The book is about a group of
penguins having a conversation on the changes taking place in their living environment, which is both life and lifestyle threatening. I was struck by the book because the author was trying to convey the usual thematic messages in a very simple story, much like Aesop''''s Fables. I brought the back to my 14-year old niece. She was immediately struck by it because she''''s very interested in animals. After she finished reading the book, we had a discussion of what she thought of the book. Of course it started with, "The penguins are very cute and so on."But she did catch some of the intended and
underlying messages simply because it was written in a way that would appeal to different segments, yet conveying the essential messages that the author wanted to. And this is quite different from the usual John Kotter books.
