White Oleander

Book Review by: Anonymous

Original Author: Janet Fitch
White oleander was recommened to me by a friend. It became one of many books pushed to the back of my mind, under the 'must
read sometime' catergory. Having passed the book in a libary, it triggered my memory and i decided to rent it out. Without a doubt this is one of the most amazing books I have ever read.
Astrid is the young teenage Daughter of Ingrid, an amazingly intricate character. Astrid has unknowingly been forced to live in the shadow of her Mother, and admires her, thriving to be just like her. Astrid's sheltered life is dramatically disruppted when Ingird is jailed for poisioning her lover. It is then that Astrid begins to realise that the world is rather differnt to how she was lead to believe. As many things happen to her, she begins to become her own person, as she is forced to accept different ways of life, and begin to live for the first time. Fitch successfully creates amazingly real characters, who provide such a wonderful foundation to this excellent read. In particular Ingrid, who sustains a powerful and intense personality throughout. I love the way Fitch is able to describe every last detail so beautifully, enabling the reader to fall into the character's perspectives and get sucked into the wonderfully controversial plot. White oleander was one of the most sad, depressing, beautiful, enspiring books I have ever read. It is thouguht provoking,at times even disturbing, but never dull, and always superblly written. This book tells the tale of a young girl, who like many has been moulded into a certain way of thinking by a scarred artist,in this case her Mother. Ingrid who has been so hurt in the past has shaped Astrid to believe what Ingrid wishes she always knew. Astrid represents a blank canvas, which is errupted by some of the most intensely dramaitc, frightening, and yet beautiful colurs ever seen. Creating a picture that tells a million tales.
