The Changeover

Book Review by: Kira

Original Author: Margaret Mahy
The Changeover begins when fourteen-year old Laura Chant has a premonition. Instead of the normal world, where her absent-minded
mother searches for her shoes so they can leave home for the day, Laura senses something forboding and dangerous waiting to change her forever. By the end of the day, her baby brother Jacko has been marked by a mysterious shopkeeper named Carmody Braque, and Laura knows that something is dreadfully wrong. When Jacko falls ill and medical science provides no answers, she turns to the only source she can think of for help: the local witches. With their assistance, she works a changeover, crossing from the daylit world of normal life into the moonlit one of the supernatural. This change grants her the power to fight Carmody Braque for the soul of her little brother.
This story is just as much about Laura herself as her quest to save Jacko. She lingers in the twilight between being a child and a young woman. As the story unfolds, the world pulls her forward into her own wisdom and feminine powers, whether she wishes it or not. Sorensen Carlisle, a strange and compelling older student, becomes her ally in both the struggle against Braque and her struggle to understand herself. In the end, Laura has come into her own power, as all young women do, and is no longer the girl she had been.
