Shanxi used to be a
revolutionary area. During the Anti-Japanese Aggression War, the people of Shanxi, under CPC leadership,
put up courageous and difficult struggles against Japanese aggressors, leaving many epic tales of heroic deeds, making great sacrifice and historical contribution to the liberation of Chinese nation. In Shanxi, a place dotted with a string of strategically placed passes and one easier to defend than attack, the Eighth Route Army, based in the Luliang and Taihang Mountains, set up three
revolutionary bases-the Shanxi-Chahaer-Hebei, Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan and Shanxi-Suiyuan. With the Headquarters of the Eighth Route Army based in Shanxi, its three backbone divisions organized and fought a series of famous battles, such as the Battle of Pingxingguan and the Battle of Hundred Regiments, leaving Shanxi with many revolutionary
pilgrimage sites. Therefore, Shanxi is rich in "red tourism" resources. On the short list of national revolutionary pilgrimage sites and destinations are Shanxi's two itineraries and six sites. This year, Shanxi has taken effective steps to promote revolutionary pilgrimage tours. People especially welcomed the move to open free of charge to the general public ten patriotic education centers within the year. During this year's May Day Golden Week, Shanxi's revolutionary pilgrimage tourism was quick to catch on.
