Shaoguan is a mountainous region in North Guangdong, where the highest peak in the province, Shikenkong (1902 m), is situated. There are abundant natural resources, especially lush forests in the region with a percentage of forest cover up to 70%. Shaoguang also has wonderful historical and humanistic landscapes, such as paleoanthropological and paleontological relics, and some famous temples, e.g. Nanhua Temple. It is one of the best areas for eco tourism in Guangdong. The current situation of the exploitation of tourism resources in the region are analyzed. It is suggested that eco tourism be taken as the main direction of tourism development. Some measures for developing eco tourism are proposed, including: 1) making a long term overall plan; 2) strengthening the construction of forest parks, natural reserves and pertinent infrastructure; and 3) enlarging propaganda and raising funds, etc. Based on the distribution characters of eco tourism resources in different parts, it is considered that the whole Shaoguan region be divided into 5 functional forest eco tourism areas, which are the western natural forest landscape area, the northern rare landform area, the northeast paleontological area, the middle paleoanthropological and religious activity area, and the southern agricultural sight seeing area.
