Article Review   by:TsingHua     Original Author: ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL RELICS

The author points out that there are two different types of Shang culture in Guanzhong district, Shaanxi province, and believes. that the geographical boundary of these two types extends southward from the lower reaches of Jing river (泾河) to Xi'an. The period Ⅰ, Ⅱ of the Beicun 北村 site and the period Ⅰ,Ⅱ of the Laoniupo (老牛坡)site belongs to Erligang type (二里冈类型) of Shang culture. At the same time, the western border of typical Shang culture already reaches to the area from yaoxian county (耀县) to Xi'an. The period Ⅲ of Beicun and the period Ⅲ of Laoniupo can be named as Beicun type (北村类型), which represents a new type of Shang culture during Yinxu (殷墟) period. The term Jingdang type (京当类型) is used to define the culture remains represented by the period Ⅰ of the Yijiabu (壹家堡) site and the period Ⅰ, Ⅱ of the Zhumazui (朱马嘴) site. The" Laoniupo remains" (老牛坡遗存) is named after the period Ⅳ-ⅥⅤof the Laoniupo site, which shows a different cultural style From Shang culture. A detailed analysis also reveals that the Laoniupo Remains ought to be an aboriginal culture in Guanzhong district. After the first and the second period of Yinxu, though some cultural elements of Shang culture can also be found, there still have a long way to go in identifying culture characteristics in Guanzhong district.
