The civilization of the Shang Dynasty is noted for its highly developed bronzetechniques. The large amount of elegant Shang Dynasty bronzes have already attracted world-wide attention. However, no rich copper resources are to be found in the Shang Dynasty cen-ter, located at present in Anyang, Zhengzhou and their neighboring areas. Where did the largeamount of copper ores for making the bronzes come from? That is an unsettled question so far!The 35 bronzes of Shang Dynasty and 22 copper and lead ore samples of Shang-Zhou Period,Spring and Autumn Period and the present time have been investigated by the trace techniques of lead isotopes. Based on comparison, the ore source for making the bronzes, shown in themiddle ratios of lead isotopes, mainly comes from the ancient mines at Ruichang, JiangxiProvince and Daye-Tong Lushan, Hubei Province. The ores for making some of the Henanbronzes shown in the high ratios of lead isotopes stem from northern areas, such as Hebei andliaoning Provinces, called Gong Fang( 方) in historical material, while those in the low ratiosof lead isotopes come from epi-multi-metal Uranium ore deposits in Jiangxi and Hunan areas, which is in agreement with the historical background of exploiting the copper resources to-ward the southern areas during the Wuding period of Shang Dynasty.
