Twin Pagoda Monastery or Yongzuo Monastery was located at Southeast of Taiyuan Railway Station. It was not only a key cultural
- relic unit under province protection, but also a symbol of Taiyuan.Built in the Ming Dynasty(A.D. 1608), the twin pagodas were imitation timber structure with a height of 54.85 m, 13 storeys, the distance between the two pagodas was 48 m. As they have long been out of repair the body of the pagodas were somewhat distorted and lost balance, below the 6th storey the wall was badly split with the largest rip of 8 cm in width and 5 m in length. For east pagoda, the case was even worse, the pinnacle of it was 2. 815 m apart from the centre and the base of it subsided by 0. 336 m.In 1994, rectifying the east pagoda was put forward on the agenda of the municipal government. After many investigations by experts, it was decided that the repair of the east pagoda tobe proceeded in two phases: rectifying it first and then, reinforceing it's structure and repairing inside and outside of the body.Rectifying ancient pagoda was the first time in China. From July 16, 1995 to September 27, 1996, during repairing period of the east pagoda, a lot of technical breakthroughs were completed. After two years' elaborate repair, the east pagoda recovered its original style and features and took a majestic appearance again.
