An Investigation Report on Some of the Newly-Built Man-Made Tourist Attractions in Beijing

Article Summary by: TsingHua

Original Author: TOURISM TRIBUNE
According to the statistics made by the relevant departments, over forty man-made landscapes have been built inBeijing in
the past few years. The authors have made an initial investigation on some of them (choosing nine of them asthe objects of investigation) in May and June, 1995. The newly-built man-made landscapes are of various kinds. Theyare not only large in size (Each attraction covers an area of over 300 mu on an average) and high in investment (Eachaverages an investment of more than 100 million yuan), but are also characterized by quite a number of silent landscapes and plurality in their investment. Although man-made landscapes can, to a certain degree, enrich the tourismproducts in the capital, invigorate local economy, improve Beijing's general image, enhaunce economic relations and exchanges with foreign countries and domestic areas and play a positive role in promoting ethics;yet, the blind investmentand stubbornly seeking for "big and complete" have resulted in low economic benefits and heavy burden of debts. Theauthors have cited three reasons in the article: 1. Lacking a feasible and general plan, and effective means of macrocontrol. 2. Too expensive admission fees. 3. Rampant, unjustiable and dishonest competitions. The authors thereby offer aseries of measures and suggestions for further improvement.
