Soil moisture status are the dominating contributors to revegetation and reforestation in degraded dry valleys of the Hengduan Mountains, and improvement of soil moisture parameters is the only alternative to ecological restoration and agricultural sustainable development in the region.Contour hedgerow system was proved to be a promising simultaneous agroforestry system for soil conservation, soil fertility improvement and more farming options for sloping agriculture in these valleys.A long-term research work was carried out in the typical dry valley of the Jinsha River. Soil bulk densities of the 0~70 cm layer are ameliorated by the hedgerow intercropping. Total water capacities and available water capacities of 0~30 cm layers under hedgerow system are improved 5.5% and 42.4%,and improved 5.8% and 32.6% in the 30~70 cm layers compared with those of CK,respectively.Soil infiltration rate, saturated hydraulic conductivity and soil specific water capacities of lower suction stage are also increased under the hedgerow intercropping system.
